Why Was Jesus Baptized?

Why Was Jesus Baptized? : Why was Jesus baptized? John the Baptist's baptism was for the repentance of sin, but Jesus was sinless. First, His Baptism settled the question in the hearts of the people that John might be the Christ. Secondly, it revealed Who is the Person of Christ. He is the Son of God. But Christ's Baptism also reveals who we are to become! Today's Gospel for the Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan is discussed in Fr. John Paul Shea's homily.

This structure, separate from the  Duomo , envelops the place where God tears open the heavens for the soul who receives the graces of baptism.  The Florentines constructed the Romanesque structure in the eleventh and twelfth centuries during an economic boom. The people—enjoying temporal benefits from God—gave thanks by means of ordered geometry, carved stone, and gilded mosaics. Guided by faith, human hands lifted up this baptistery as an invitation for the Lord to come down and reign

In celebrating the centenary of the consecration and dedication to God of the Cathedral of Saints Mary and Joseph, we are in a sense celebrating the 100th anniversary of our cathedral’s “baptism”. At our own baptism we are anointed with sacred chrism and thereby consecrated or set apart for the glory of God
